Offshore wind power report

The Fingrid offshore wind power study presents preliminary connection possibilities for offshore wind power to be connected to the mainland Finland's transmission grid in the 2030s.

The preliminary connection possibilities for offshore wind power presented in the study have been determined from the perspective of the electrical grid, taking into account the offshore wind power projects known to Fingrid as well as other electricity production and consumption projects. The study does not present connection solutions for individual customer projects; instead, connection points and capacities are reserved for projects through connection agreements once the projects' permitting is confirmed. It is also possible that more connections than those presented in this study can be implemented in the 2030s, and in areas other than those defined in this study, if the growth in electricity consumption is stronger than the assumptions of this study or if new consumption is located closer to offshore wind power connections.

Finland has significant potential as a producer of offshore wind power, but it is uncertain when it will become economically viable. Particularly decisive is the competitive position between offshore wind power and onshore wind power. The background scenario of the study assumes that wind power investments in Finland will focus on offshore wind power from the turn of the 2020s and 2030s, due to either economic viability or acceptability. This assumption differs from Fingrid's base scenario.

Fingrid has not made investment decisions on the network reinforcements required to implement offshore wind power connections based on this study. We maintain readiness to connect offshore wind power to the transmission grid and assess the implementation of necessary network investments alongside the progress of other customer projects. This is done as part of the main grid development plan published every two years.
